Cirstea and Medina say good bye to the tournament
Apr 8, 2010

Neither Anabel Medina nor Sorana Cirstea will be able to repeat their success from last year and play the semifinals round. The first one has lost to Sera Errani from Italy in straight sets (6-1, 7-6) in less than two hours of play. The match has started up the hill to Valencian player already during first few games. The Italian took her first opportunity and broke the Spaniard's service, which was not able to come back and easily gave the first set away loosing it 6-1 in only half an hour. In the second set Medina was much more into the game. The public was supporting the Spaniard all the time from the tribunes, encouraging her to repeat the performance from last year, when she reached the semifinals. Although the Italian was up 4 games to 2, Anabel managed to recover to 4-4 to later with the advantage 6-5 and a set point win the second set. But this did not happen and Errani eventually defeated Media 7 to 6, taking the revenge for last year, when Medina took the victory away from her in the second round.

After the match Errani stressed that she is very pleased to have eliminated one of the favorites for the tournament title and has not ruled out a surprise in this tournament. Tomorrow the Italian will face the winner of the macth between Beatriz Garcia and Belgian Kim Clijters.

Cirstea leaves, too

The other match of the day, between two Romanian Sorana Cirstea and Simona Halep was played on court 1 of Puente Romano Tennis Club. The match was very tight, especially in the second set, which was eventually won by Halep in the tiebreak. With this victory, Halep gets to the quarterfinals, “sweeping away” Cirstea’s opportunities to repeat the good performance she achieved last year, when she reached the semifinals.

This afternoon on the Centre Court, three big favorites of the tournament will face the three of Spaniards, who entered the Main Draw from the preliminary round. Beatriz Garcia, Laura Pous and Estrella Cabeza Seville will face Kim Clijters, Flavia Pennetta and Victoria Azarenka, respectively.
